Parking

By John I. Blair

Occasionally I think
Of the danger looming
In something
Seemingly so simple
As a parked car.

In the office lot
It’s motionless, inert,
A harmless hunk of metal,
Rubber, plastic, glass.

But potential
For disaster,
Mayhem and destruction,
Is there, implicit
In the laws of physics,
Laws of chance, coincidence.

After all
Mass always has
Force inherent
In its very presence;
E does equal
MC squared.
The squaring starts
When the engine starts
And destruction can commence
When you are not alert
And someone’s parked
Behind you.
