Half Moon

It’s only half a moon, and blue at that;
Yet as it glows above the rooftops
It dominates the night.

My kind has known this moon
Since life began in tidal pools;
But all we know is what we see,

And that depends
Upon the man or woman viewing
And when and where.

Here and now, in flower-fragranced air
Still filled with city sounds at three a.m.,
I contemplate the partial moon

And, being me, must choose
If a fragmentary moon
Might merit only half a poem.
