When finches flock onto the feeders
And sunshine on the birdbath
Shatters into blinding shards,
I find it hard to hide my heart
In dark places.
One final autumn rose
Has bloomed beyond the deck
And sheds a fragile fragrance.
I bring it fresh into the house
And sit beside you on the bed
To see you smile.
